Abstract

ABSTRACT IN response to electronic moisture meter calibrations that went into effect in Illinois and Iowa on September 1, 1980, naturally wet corn samples were collected in Illinois and tested for moisture with newly calibrated electronic moisture meters. During Fall 1980, 169 samples were tested for moisture in 6 commercial meters and compared to the 103°C 72-h air-oven reference method. Additional data from the Illinois State Department of Agriculture is presented for 215 samples that were tested in 10 commercial moisture meters. Differences between moisture meter readings and the air-oven moistures ranged from +0.1 to +0.6 at low moistures to -0.6 to -3.0 at high moistures after the September 1, 1980 calibrations were placed into effect. Data has been used by moisture meter manufacturers to assist in recalibration of their respective corn moisture meters on August 1, 1981. Changes in calibrations on August 1, 1981 have affected most corn producing states in addition to Illinois and Iowa, because that calibration change was tentatively adopted by the Federal Grain Inspection Service for Motomco meters which are used by all federally licensed grain grading inspectors.
