Abstract

ABSTRACT WHEN field moisture of medium grain rice (Brazos variety) was 22 percent w.b., the range in moisture content of grains on the most mature panicles was less than 10 percent. The range on the most immature pani-cles was often more than 10 percent. Average moisture differences ranging from 21 to 29 percent were observed for groups of grains harvested from the tops of ten of the most mature panicles and from the bottoms of ten of the least mature panicles on a given day during the normal harvest season. Variations up to 46 percent moisture content were observed between grains from the top of the most mature panicle and grains from the bottom of the least mature panicle. The longer rice at harvest moisture is left in the field, the greater is the probability that the lower moisture rice will fissure before these grains are harvested.
