Abstract

By extending to solid state chemistry a methodology developed in molecular chemistry, we show how one can calculate the contribution of a resonance structure in a solid by using the Bloch orbitals or, in general, the delocalized crystal orbitals. The method is applied to polyacetylene: the Peierls distortions and the conductivity of this system are explained by examining the contributions of some ionic resonance structures.
