Abstract

The modulational instability of the zone boundary mode (ZBM) and the band edge modes (BEMs) in two-dimensional (2D) nonlinear lattices are analyzed rigorously based on the theory for the monodromy matrix of Gauss's hypergeometric differential equations. We find that the modulational instability characteristics of the ZBM and BEMs are significantly different.
