Abstract

The effect of ion dynamics on the modulational instability of the electrostatic beat wave at the difference frequency of two incident laser beams in a hot, collisionless, and transversely magnetized plasma has been studied theoretically. The full Vlasov equation in terms of gyrokinetic variables is employed to obtain the nonlinear response of ions and electrons. It is found that the growth rate of modulational instability is about two orders higher when ion motions are included. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.
