Abstract

The nonlinear phenomena of ionization waves in Ar–Hg gas mixtures were analysed experimentally for the case of external current modulations. With a single wave, the nonlinear effects appearing with the growth of the wave cause the wave number to decrease for any given frequency. The dispersion relation for ionization waves is subject to the presence of a dominant wave with natural frequency such that the dispersion relation is expressed by a straight line with a negative slope in the frequency wave number frame. Multi-frequency spectra due to double modulations of the current are explained by assuming nonlinear interactions in the product of two waves or of a wave and an oscillation.
