Abstract
A set of new lactone-fused naphthopyrans substituted with aryl or arylethynyl groups were synthesized using an acid-catalyzed one-pot reaction. These colorless dyes exhibit photochromic activity at 20 °C acquiring intense reddish hues under UV light, that fades completely, in the dark within a few minutes. The introduction of the arylethynyl group increases the thermal stability of the reddish photoisomers, resulting in darker shades, while the discoloration process remains under 6 min.
