Abstract

This paper proposes an efficient modulation design method for a multi-carrier visible light communication (VLC) system with signal-dependent shot noise (SDSN). Improved constellations are obtained through solving optimization problems aiming at minimizing the system symbol error rate (SER), subject to lighting constraints. A new system mathematical model is formulated with the SDSN taken into account. By maximizing the minimum Euclidean distance (MED) between the symbols, improved constellations are discovered with different lighting constraints. Furthermore, our multi-carrier design embraces the DC-informative framework, i.e. the DC bias carries information jointly with the subcarriers to provide high power efficiency. With equal spectrum efficiency, the power gain of our DC-Informative optical (DCIO) OFDM over the conventional phase shift keying base OFDM scheme ranges from 3–30dB with parameters of practical interest.
