Abstract
• We re-iterate that foreign body responses (FBR) universally exist in biomaterials implantation • We highlight that preventing FBR is unwise and modulating it can lead to multiple possibilities • We discuss the strategies for modulating FBR, including: controlling protein adsorption, regulating macrophage behaviour and utilising the capsules for regenerative purposes • We particularly stress the direction of developing bioactive (immunoactive) materials
