Abstract

Background: Essential hypertension (EH) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) remain the fast emerging as global health priorities. Objective: We aimed to study the relation between the level of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and the structural and functional parameters of the heart in EH patients with concomitant T2DM. Materials and methods: We examined 67 patients with stage II EH of 2-3 degrees with concomitant T2DM and 20 healthy subjects as control. For all subjects we measured serum IGF-1 concentrations and performed Doppler echocardiography. The results: EH patients with concomitant T2DM displayed a significantly decreased level of IGF-1, i.e. patients with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) (128.4 [92.2; 156.8] ng/ml, p<0.05) and those without it (132.2 [86.2; 152.1] ng/ml, p<0.05), compared to control (149.7 [13.0; 198.1] ng/ml).
