Abstract

Mental disorders are a leading source of medical economic burden. Current therapies do not target the cause of these disorders: dysfunctional communication in distributed brain circuits. Electrical brain stimulation can effectively modulate such circuits, but clinical neurostimulation trials in mental disorders have primarily target symptoms and not underlying functional deficits. Cognitive control deficits are common across mental disorders, including depression, addiction, schizophrenia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
