Abstract

Data center networking is becoming more challenging day by day in today’s world of cloud computing. Due to fast technical innovation and vendor diversity, heterogeneity widely exists among data center networks (DCN). Increasing service requirements by industries or organizations requires expansion of the data center network. In the construction of the mega data centers, shipping container-based modular networks are used as basic building blocks. In this paper, we propose Modular Rook (MR) Network and a new modular data center (MDC) network design using Rook’s graph for inter-container network. Modular Rook (MR) combines the advantages of both structured inter-container network and heterogeneous container networks. Modular Rook (MR) is found to possess brilliant network properties such as low network diameter and high bisection bandwidth with a fewer number of switches and links as compared to other DCN topologies.
