Abstract

This paper presents a single-phase grid-tied modular multilevel converter (MMC) with multiple small-scale wind power generators. The MMC consists of the series-connected two-level inverters, each one connects to a power conversion system for wind power generator, and can connect to the high-voltage distribution feeder directly without passive filter and transformer. The generated power can be flowed to a grid through the MMC by the individual bridge-cell and individual cell-voltage controls under various wind speed situations. A computer simulation is implemented to confirm the validity of the proposed system using piece-wise linear electrical circuit simulation (PLECS). Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed MMC based wind power generation system can control power flow with a unity power factor while controlling each capacitor voltage on average.
