Modular invariance of the partition function for the bosonic string in background fields

Abstract

In the present paper we investigate the modular properties of the bosonic string partition function with massless background fields and show that the requirement of modular invariance on the said functional implies the vanishing of the dilaton β-function at the one-loop level in string perturbation theory.
