Abstract

This paper proposes a novel modular differential power processing (DPP) converter with inherent over-current protection capability for photovoltaic (PV) systems under partial shading. The proposed DPP converter can be derived by integrating panel-level and module-level DPP converters with reducing total switch count, achieving the simplified circuit. PV systems can flexibly be scaled up thanks to the modular design of the proposed converter. Furthermore, series-resonant tanks in the proposed DPP converter exhibit constant-current characteristics that realize the inherent over-current protection capability against short-circuit failure of PV panels. The prototype for a 1-kW PV system consisting of two modules, each comprising four panels connected in series, was built and tested. In addition to the over-current protection capability, the enhanced energy yield (17.8%) was experimentally demonstrated.
