Abstract

In a modular approach of controlling a flexible manufacturing system a large control program was broken down into smaller program units in a way that they can work independently of each other. By this modular approach an interlinked information flow between shop floor level and management level could be obtained via data transfer by FTP protocol. This modular approach increases the effectiveness of information flow within FMS, thus increases productivity. This up-down information flow makes it easier for the management to control FMS cells just as a transparent production system. In this paper, the job order and other necessary information transfer from upper level to FMS cell level and from cell level to upper level has been described. The structure of the modular control system of FMS is discussed and it has been shown how the FMS control system effects on production planning, process planning and tool management.
