Abstract

We report on a comprehensive analysis of inclusive as well as exclusive high-energy data on hadron–proton scattering. We are led to conclude that the parton model correctly describes inelastic phenomena and its shadow, the elastic channel, when additional geometric information in impact parameter space is added. The following scenario emerges: at low energies, collisions between quarks dominate, whereas at higher energies, gluon-initiated reactions are responsible for the total cross-section rise, which is due to the gluon's singular behaviour at small fractional longitudinal momentum. We obtain excellent agreement with all experimental high-energy data considered.
