Abstract

We examine two ways of generalizing the Skyrme model. The first one involves the treatment of a chiral-symmetry-breaking term which is added to the Skyrme Lagrangian to account for the pion mass. Several nonequivalent terms are constructed and compared. The Skyrme model is also analyzed with respect to higher-order terms in the derivative of the pion fields. We examine a model which exhibits all the good features of an effective theory of mesons.
