Abstract

This study systematically examined the effects of instructions, verbal prompts, and monetary reinforcement given to psychiatric aides for reinforcing patients within a token economy program. Baseline observations revealed that psychiatric aides dispensed low rates of reinforcement for appropriate patient behavior. Instructing the aides had no effect, verbal prompts produced a slight increase, and a monetary bonus resulted in a substantial increase in aide-dispensed reinforcement. This latter change in aide behavior was accompanied by improved functioning in two of the three patients selected for observation. When the monetary bonus was withdrawn, aide-dispensed reinforcement as well as task-oriented patient behavior declined to a near baseline level. Procedures for maintaining the reiforcing behavior of aides toward patients are briefly discussed.
