Abstract

Study Objective: To describe the use of tissue expanders for vaginal reconstruction.Design and Participants: Case report of a 21-year-old patient status post resection for rhabdomyosarcoma (13 years old) of bladder base. Anterior pelvic exenteration was performed.Setting: The procedures were conducted at the University of Tennessee, Memphis, Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center.Interventions: Dow Corning expanders were inserted into both labia majora. Genital reconstruction was done as a separate procedure 2–3 months later enabling vulvar tissue expansion.Result: Functional vagina.Conclusions: Tissue expanders are a useful and viable alternative for vaginal reconstructive surgery in selected patients.
