Abstract

A planar travelling wave tube comprising a planar helix, constituted from a pair of unidirectionally conducting screens, and partially loaded with a high-density plasma, supports plasma surface waves and the conventional helix modes. Under suitable conditions of plasma density, helix pitch angle and separation between plasma and helix, the two modes are strongly coupled. A sheet electron beam propagating close to the plasma surface drives the coupled modes to instability, giving a large growth rate.
