Abstract

A new “screw-and-suction” device modified from Backlund's prototype for stereotactic evacuation of intracerebral hematoma is described. This modification can facilitate the evacuation of the hematoma in a smooth and gentle manner. The instrument has been applied to six patients with intracerebral hematomas in the basal ganglia region. Of these patients, five recovered to a satisfactory condition and one died. Our preliminary experience shows that most of the hematomas can be effectively evacuated by a computed tomography-guided stereotactic technique. The procedure may be indicated as an alternative treatment for high-risk patients with deep-seated hematomas.
