Abstract

The 5D0 – 7Fn fluorescence of Eu3+ ions in Y2O3 thin films grown on Al2O3 substrates was studied. The films were produced by laser molecular beam epitaxy. The spectral lines revealed small inhomogeneous broadening which evidences for small distortions of cubic lattice. The measurements of the fluorescence lifetimes provided an indication of photon density of states and local field effects due to a nearby dielectric interface on radiative transitions in impurity ions in thin crystalline films.
