Abstract

The literature during the past few decades is replete with methods to improve denture retention and stability. The maxillary submucosal vestibuloplasty is a relatively simple, yet effective method of increasing the functional alveolar ridge with a minimum of post-operative morbidity. This article presents a modification of the maxillary submucosal vestibuloplasty originally described by O bwegesser 3. The procedure is indicated for edentulous patients who experience unsatisfactory denture retention and stability due to muscle and mucosal attachments located near the maxillary alveolar crest, have adequate bone height, and healthy vestibular mucosa. The modifications presented herein provide improved surgical exposure, improved vestibular depth, and a comfortable, hygienic and esthetic removable interim prosthesis.
