Abstract
PURPOSE We determined the efficacy of modified gold weight implantation in a series of patients with keratitis and lagophthalmos following seventh nerve damage. The results of modified gold weight implantation for lagophthalmos were assessed after a mean follow-up of 20 months. Cosmetic appearance, physical comfort and complications were evaluated.METHODS Implantation of gold implants was performed in 18 patients with poor eyelid closure secondary to facial nerve palsy. All 18 patients had corneal and cosmetic problems. Conservative therapy failed and recovery of the seventh nerve was not expected.RESULTS The observation time was 6-28 months. Tolerance was excellent, no complications such as infection or extrusion were noted. All patients are doing well, no additive therapy such as artificial tears, eye drops or ointments is necessary. The cornea is well protected, no complications such as keratitis, conjunctivitis or corneal ulcer have occurred.CONCLUSION After weighing the advantages and disadvantages of these modified gold implants, this appears to be a good method for treating lagophthalmos.
