Abstract

1. 1. A seasonal comparison of histones from testes of Asterias vulgaris, which exhibit an annual reproductive cycle and retain histones in mature sperm, indicated a relative increase in H3 and H4 variants during the period of enhanced spermatogonial mitosis. 2. 2. PAGE bands representing these proteins were characteristic of triply modified (acetylated) forms of H3 and singly modified H4. 3. 3. Doubly modified H3 and unmodified H4 were the dominant subfractions in chromatin from ripe testes containing mature spermatozoa.
