Modified eye speculum for aspiration.

Abstract

This modification permits continuous aspiration of fluid from the conjunctival sac during intraocular surgery. With the use of solutions such as α-chymotrypsin and acetylcholine in cataract surgery, in addition to solutions for anterior chamber irrigations and dripping to avoid suturing in a bloody field, fluid tends to collect in the conjunctival sac and to be sucked into the anterior chamber during manipulations. In addition, the sterility of wet drapes is difficult to maintain. With continuous aspiration at the outer extension of the conjunctival sac, solutions may be used copiously without laking in the sac or saturating the drapes.
