Abstract

Czochralski technique is very little utilized for organic nonlinear optical materials. In this paper a modified Czochralski crystal growth system for the growth of benzil (C 6H 5CO COC 6H 5) single crystals has been used. Single crystals of benzil (10×10×20 mm 3) of optical quality have been grown successfully by this technique. Angle tuned second harmonic generation of Nd:YAG laser radiation at λ=1.06 μm with a conversion efficiency n = I 2ω I ω = 0.4% has been demonstrated. We also used a Nd:YAG pulse laser to measure the radiation damage threshold as 159MW/cm 2 (c-axis) and 239MW/cm 2 (a-axis) under the conditions that laser pulse width is 10 ns.
