Abstract

Summary The authors have studied the structur and the cell types of the pituitary gland of adult females of Torpedo marmorata Risso between gestations, before gestation and during gestation. The pituitaries were fixed in Stieve' fixative and the section, stained with the following methods: Galgano I, Galgano II, Galgano-della Corte, PAS, aldehyde fuesin, Gomori-Bargmann. The hypophysis is formed as follows: rostral lobe with the small cavity of the dorsal sack, ventral lobe and neurointermediale lobe. In the rostral lobe the are alpha cells, beta cells and delta cells. In the ventral lobe the cells arc all of the same type (« basophilic cells of the ventral lobe»). In the neuro-intermediate lobe the most of the cells are slightly basophilie; also there are some giant cells with yellow or blue granules. In the pregnant females is possible to observe an increasing number of the follicles and of the colloid both in the rostral lobe and in the ventral one; it is also possible to note the appearance of the colloid and of several giant cells with blue granules in the neuro-intemediate lobe; probably it exists also an increase of the number of the delta cells in the rostral lobe.
