Abstract

To enhance the durability of hemp twine (HT) in cement composite, this study focuses on a holistic approach by investigating the effects of hybrid treatments on the HT. The treatments involve alkalization, treatment with alkaline copper quaternary type D after which the treated HT were grouped into three and the three groups were coated with paraffin wax, epoxy acrylate and waste engine oil respectively, thereby generating three hybrid treatments (hybrid 1, hybrid 2 and hybrid 3). The effects of the treatments on the properties of the HT were investigated using X-ray diffractometer, thermogravimetry analysis, scanning electron microscopy and micro force testing machine and results obtained reveal that the impact of the treatments on the HT is positive. Moreover, the effects of the treatments on water absorption capacity and resistance to micro-organism attack were also investigated and interesting results were obtained.
