Abstract

The Mechanical Energy Resolver, an instrument for the dynamic mechanical analysis of polymers, has been modified in two ways. First, a high temperature oven has been added to allow analysis of thermoplastic melts and composites in dynamic simple shear deformation up to temperatures of 400°C. The previous limit was 200°C. Results are presented for an engineering thermoplastic and a graphite/thermoplastic composite. Secondly, a cantilever beam bending fixture has been developed to determine the transition temperatures of rigid plastics and composites. The fixture allows determination of elastic moduli at temperatures below softening. The elastic modulus of a graphite/thermoplastic composite was found to be approximately the same as the modulus of graphite fibers.
