Abstract

The configurational changes of mitochondria from the choroid plexus ependymal cells of lateral ventricles of the rat's brain were investigated in vivo, using ventriculocisternal fixation technique with stereotaxic apparatus. Thus fixation resembles the manner in which mitochondria are fixed in fractions or in cell culture. After 7 min of continuous perfusion of brain ventricles with CSF mock solution containing 1 mM DNP, mitochondria have changed their configuration from intermediate to condensed state. In condensed mitochondria the outer compartment showed a 31% increase in volume density and showed a 34.5% increase of partition coefficient Eocm. The inner compartment showed a 21.2% decrease in volume density and 13.1% decrease of partition coefficient Emm. These data indicate that the relationship between the two most important mitochondrial compartments, inner membrane and matrix, is rather stable. After 15 min swollen mitochondria with pale matrix and fragmented membranes have been observed. In those cells polymorphism of the pathological changes of mitochondria in pathogenesis sequence were found.
