Abstract

Objective: Evaluate the perceived benefits of therapeutic-yoga as a complement to inpatient rehabilitation. Design: Mixed-methods prospective pilot study. Setting: Two inpatient rehabilitation facilities. Participants: Patients hospitalized who were >18 years-old, diagnosed with any physical disability requiring inpatient rehabilitation, and who receive a recommendation to engage in yoga during inpatient rehabilitation from a therapist or nurse. Interventions: Group or individual therapeutic-yoga, led by a yoga therapist, 2x a week. Main Outcome Measure(s): Qualitative semi-structured interviews via telephone, completed after discharge. Results: In total, 53people were recruited, 31 (58%) completed qualitative interviews. Average age was 57, most were male (55%) and single (52%) with some college education (61%). On average, participant completed 3 yoga sessions (range 1-9). Qualitative data support perceived benefit from therapeutic-yoga. Data were categorized as improved: breathing; relaxation; or psychological wellbeing. Exemplar quotes are included. Breathing capacity improvements were associated with improved functional mobility and activities of daily living. “The breathing is helping me especially during transfers and when taking my medicines” Relaxation techniques (deep breathing, meditation) were identified as useful. “Help me deal with some of the frustrations due to recovery, taught me to breathe and relax better” Improved psychological wellbeing (coping with diagnoses, attitude, confidence, and focus) was discussed: “Controlling my breathing and the meditation has increased my confidence to overcome my disability” Finally, 74% continued yoga at home and 97% recommended therapeutic-yoga to others in inpatient rehabilitation. Conclusions: Results indicate individuals in inpatient rehabilitation benefited from and recommended therapeutic-yoga. These findings indicate a need for further integration and testing of therapeutic-yoga during rehabilitation.
