Abstract

SEVERAL studies have shown that morphine impairs the release of acetylcholine (ACh) at the peripheral1–3 and central4–6 cholinergic synapses. These studies have given rise to the suggestion that when the influence of morphine is removed from the neurones, either by withdrawal of the drug or the injection of a narcotic antagonist, there may be an excessive release of ACh at. the cholinoceptive neurones7,8. A sudden release of ACh may then lead to the development of a narcotic abstinence syndrome (NAS).
