Abstract

This paper focuses on the thrust direction misalignment and lateral force caused by the rotational flow at the impeller outlet of the waterjet azimuth propulsion system. Momentum distribution within the three nozzles is found to be the direct reason. Two methods, i.e. area match between the left nozzle and right nozzle and adding guide vanes inside the middle nozzle are proposed and their effects are analysed respectively based on numerical simulation. Results show that an appropriate area ratio can eliminate thrust direction misalignment with a small increase in lateral force. Guide vanes can effectively reduce lateral force by 56% without affecting aligned thrust direction.
