Abstract

Problem behaviors exhibited by demented individuals have met with a variety of techniques to increase manageability. One approach has been to utilize special stimuli (e.g., colors, signposts) along with prompts to attend to these stimuli to bring responses under more appropriate stimulus control. In this study, five male, demented inpatients were exposed to a variety of stimulus enhancement techniques intended to reduce inappropriate voiding, climbing into the beds of other patients, entering into the nursing station unprompted, attempting to leave a protective environment, and to increase accuracy in the location of pertinent ward locations. All five patients showed at least an 86% change in the desired direction.
