Abstract

Aluminide coatings on a mild steel substrate were modified by using an oxygen-active element, yttrium, for improved resistance to corrosive erosion. The performance of the yttrium-containing coating during the following three erosion conditions was evaluated: dry sand erosion at different temperatures, erosion in a dilute NaCl slurry containing 30% silica sand, and erosion in a dilute H2SO4 slurry containing 30% silica sand. Results of the study demonstrated that yttrium significantly improved the resistance of the aluminide coating to both corrosive erosion and dry sand erosion.
