Abstract

In this article, dielectric as well as electro-optical parameters have been investigated for unirradiated 4-cyano-4′-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) along with the gamma-radiated 5CB, as a function of temperature and voltage. The sample exhibits a strong positive dielectric anisotropy due to the presence of a large dipole moment along with the major molecular axis. The dielectric anisotropy Δϵ decreases for the irradiated 5CB sample as a result of gamma radiation. Some electro-optical parameters such as rotational viscosity, response time have also been determined and compared with the unirradiated 5CB samples.
