Abstract

The large-scale modernisation undertakings of the Polish army call for serious reflection regarding their necessity, on the one hand, and their effectiveness, on the other. Ido not share the view of the many supporters of excessive armaments that they have already or will soon make Poland, if not asuperpower, then at least astate immune to external threats, especially from the Russian Federation, and largely independent in terms of security. It seems that the problem is not about the statistics of new armaments, although they are impressive. The key issue here is another one contained in the question: to what extent are we improving the state defence system in this way? Because if this is not the case, it would mean that this process is driven by the war beyond our eastern border rather than by the rationality deeply embedded in the structures of NATO and the EU.
