Abstract

This paperbound volume is the second in a series of bimonthly symposia devoted to the management of major categories of disease. In the first half of this particular issue, Dr. Muschenheim and 13 other authors review the therapy of various pulmonary disorders; Dr. Capps and seven others summarize the management of selected hepatic diseases in the second half. Pro. —Since each contributor is a recognized authority in his field (and has probably written similar reviews elsewhere), the individual chapters are authoritative and scarcely controversial. Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema by DesPrez and Muschenheim is especially thorough and detailed, and Hepatic Coma Syndromes by Summerskill is uniquely lucid and complete. In general, speculation is minimal, errors are few, and style is factual. Con. —This publication, in both principle and practice, is wrong. First, there is no need for such repetitious and unoriginal therapeutic collections; standard medical textbooks, current journals, and annual reviews
