Abstract As complicated as the meanings and uses of the tenses considered so far may seem, we have principally been examining only a narrow range of phenomena, namely those in which the tense forms have their “normal,” nominal values. In the Indo-European languages this actually occurs only under certain special conditions-generally when the verb is the main verb of an independent clause and is in the indicative mood.
