Abstract
Electrolysis and thermolysis are the often cited contenders for production of hydrogen by water splitting. In this study, a thorough thermodynamic analysis is used to determine the conditions for thermolysis to be competitive with the older electrolytic procedure. A comparison of these results with the actual state of the art of thermolysis justifies a research effort on the more versatile and readily available electrolysis procedure.
