Abstract

Ion exchange is now a very well established field. New developments in this area are sometimes viewed by the value to what already exists, and not always for their own merit. This state of affairs, typical of many mature areas of research, tends to reduce enthusiasm for continuation and further exploration for new discoveries, or for establishing better understanding of existing knowledge. The purpose of this series of lectures is to consolidate the present advances in one area of modern research in ion exchange, namely, selective ion exchange, pointing out, through real examples taken from our own work as well as those of others, to reasons for following certain directions, and trying to indicate the needs and challenges awaiting us. This course would, therefore, be better defined as modern research in selective ion exchange.
