Abstract
The Calos of Catalonia are a Gypsy group worth an anthropological study. Mataro, a city near Barcelona, a rich community not in the outskirts of the city but in the centre, cultivates good relations with the payos (non Gypsies). These people describe themselves as Gypsies and speak the Catalan language. They are in a sense modern Gypsies. Their apparent normality—the reason other Gypsies call them 'apayados' (more payos than Gypsies)—is highly significant.
