Abstract

A review of progress to date is presented. Topics discussed are as follows: the wind environment and the effect on mean wind profiles of terrain roughness and hills, of tropical cyclones and thunderstorms, of large extratropical storms. Atmospheric turbulence, integral scales of turbulence, turbulence spectra, cross spectra of longitudinal velocity fluctuations, dependence of wind speeds on averaging time. Extreme wind climatology, probability distributions of extreme wind speeds, estimation of extreme wind speeds, extreme wind speeds in hurricane-prone regions, climatology of tornadoes. The contributions to wind engineering of meteorology, micrometeorology, aerodynamics, structural dynamics, aero elasticity, wind tunnel testing, full scale measurement technologies and serviceability criteria are briefly discussed.
