Abstract

Industrial automation is being applied ever more rapidly, within process industries and discrete parts manufacture. The intent of this paper is to illustrate the state of the art and widespread application of industrial automation by some arbitrarily chosen examples, and to look forward to the impact we can expect over the next years. Increasing emphasis in future developments will be on harmonizing basic system structures, communications, and user-friendly man-machine interfaces, and on providing the appropriate engineering tools for developing, configuring and maintaining automation systems.
