Abstract

This paper covers modern developments in aeolian vibration during the last decade and is a sequel to an earlier publication ( Electr. Power Syst. Res., 5 (1982) 73 – 85). For laminar wind, a simple formula for calculating the aeolian response of a solitary conductor, which circumvents the uncertainty of the wind energy input, is presented. A kaleidoscope of flow phenomena around a circular cylinder is briefly reviewed. The effect of upstream turbulence on aeolian vibration is treated. Finally, an analytical solution for the response of a solitary conductor excited by buffeting forces due to turbulent wind is obtained via the well-known method of random vibration.
