Abstract

The Chinese traditional Ming style round-backed armchair is recognized as one of the best works representing Chinese traditional wooden furniture. Many designers in the contemporary world have applied the design points of the traditional Chinese Ming-style round-backed armchair to modern designs. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the design characteristics of the Ming-style round-backed armchair with modern design methods, and to study the inspiration of the design points of the traditional Chinese round-backed armchair for contemporary furniture design. The advantages and disadvantages of traditional Chinese round-backed armchairs are analyzed and compared with modern armchairs. Successful design cases of use and improvement of the traditional design are given, such as realized by contemporary Danish designer Hans Wegner. Modern design practices based on traditional wooden furniture are reviewed. The authors conclude that the study of China's excellent traditional wooden furniture represented by the Chinese traditional Ming-style round-backed armchair will promote the development of modern furniture design on the global scale.
