Abstract

The analysis of modern aspects of nature and pathogenesis of cognitive disorders in epilepsy is presented. The cognitive disorders of different degree of severance are seen in 40–54% of patients with epilepsy. We detected 3 main causes of cognitive disorders: etiologic factors of epilepsy, epileptic seizure itself and the impact of anticonvulsants. The article presents the marks of epileptic seizures which can be predictors of cognitive deficit. The presumed mechanisms of impact on cognitive functions both seizures themselves and interictal epileptic activity in EEG are discussed. The article presents the mechanism of action of different anticonvulsants and emphasizes the drugs with negative impact on cognitive functions. Typical for epilepsy mnestic disorders, disturbance of attention, speech, ideation and executive functions are discussed. The basic hypotheses of cognitive disorders are disclosed.
