Abstract
Historians of Modern Architecture have cultivated the image of the architect as a temperamental genius, unconcerned by issues of politeness or pragmatics. Despite their indisputable place within the architectural canon, many of the most important works of Modern Architecture were heavily contested on pragmatic grounds, such as cost, briefs and particularly concerning issues of suitability and effectiveness in relation to climate and weather. This paper will discuss a number of famed instances in the history of Modern Architecture where climatic conditions have become a contested issue in the reception of ‘the masterpiece’.
